Steam tents are one of our all time favorite ways to keep our lungs healthy! We do this consistently, anytime we know we need extra support.
To do a steam tent:
- Take a bowl of boiling water
- Drop a couple drops of oil in the water (we switch between R.C. and Raven)
- Put a towel over your head
- Sit with towel over head, over bowl of boiling water for 10 minutes
- After the 10 minutes is finished, lay over the arm of a couch (face down towards the ground)
- Have someone pat on your back (all over) for a minute or so
- Then done!

We do steam tents for adults, and started Gray with the steam tent at around age 5. Before Gray was 5 we did the younger children’s version.
Here is what we do for steam with younger children:
1. We apply an oil blend to the chest (SniffleEase or something gentle for children that supports happy lungs)
2. Then:
- As we let the oil set, we start the shower in the bathroom as hot as we can get it.
- We let it run for a few minutes to get it super steamy.
- Once we know the bathroom is nice and steamy, we go in and stand in there (by the shower, not in it)
- As we are hanging out in the steam, we play airplane on and off
- I hold Gray on his tummy face down and we move him around like he is an airplane.
- As I hold him face down, I pat his back. That way he is kept busy and playing, and I am helping loosen anything that needs to be loosened, (I don’t actually make him stay like an airplane for 10 minutes, we just do it throughout the 10 minutes on and off).
3. Once finished, we come out of the bathroom and pat the back a little more (with the head towards the ground), then we are done!
We do this consistently 2-3 times throughout the day. We also keep our diffuser and humidifier close by (along with the other things listed in the winter wellness post)!
